Gears - I've mainly used
straight spur gears for mechanical transmissions in which a compact
arrangement for the speed reduction is needed. Establishing the
correct shaft centre distance and maintaining it can be an
issue as gears are relatively sensitive to incorrect separation
distances between the supporting shafts. Spur gears are available in
a range of tooth sizes specified by their "module" or "diametral
pitch" and meshing gears must have the same module / DP. Steel and
plastic gears are available. The gear accuracy grade is probably
less important in DIY builds as the inevitable errors in positioning
do not warrant the use of gears cut to high accuracy.
